Our latest Kinetic theme for Keynote '09 is uniquely adventurous, pairing lush illustration and texture with the poetry of kinetic motion to bring each slide to life.

Canto finds it's inspiration in the classic manuscript - the hand made feel of ink and paint, finials and flourishes illuminating text and photos alike. Richly textured paper provides a backdrop for meticulously crafted illustration, a bold brush stroke bringing color and punctuation to swirls, vines and scrollwork that reinterpret classic motifs with a distinctly modern flair. The combination creates a timeless yet undeniably modern aesthetic well suited to a wide range of general-purpose topics.

Canto brings the digital page to life, designed for presenters who find that the splatter of paint and hand drawn illustration presents a compelling alternative in an age of digital perfection. The included master slides - a range of traditional, narrative-driven content and Storybook-style designs - blend classic layouts with the Canto accent illustrations and hand etched lines to carry the motif of paper and pen forward into the modern age. The 2D chart fills echo the base paper texture in tonal colors that integrate beautifully with the surrounding palette, while the simplicity of the sketched bullets lend a decidedly hand-drawn air. But it's the interplay of each of these otherwise static elements when they're set to motion that brings Canto's true nature to the surface.

Kinetic Energy 101.

Canto truly comes to life as a Kinetic theme.  Our Kinetic themes embed Build-In and Build-Out settings for slide-level objects right into the Master Slide - producing a jaw-dropping, motion-graphics inspired feel with little more than a point + click.  On every Kinetic Master, the Canto layouts emerge in choreographed motion, building the principal elements in piece by piece in an arranged, ordered flow.  Each object on the master is set to exit the stage as smoothly as they came in, clearing the stage for the next entrance.  Select a Kinetic Master, add your copy or supporting photography, and press Play to watch it all happen - it's really that simple.  Want to get your charts or tables in on the action?  We've included a tutorial in the Supplemental file that walks you through the basics of integrating your own builds into the Canto Kinetic framework that will make quick work of expanding your cast.

The Slides

The Canto theme includes 33 master slides (Pro Edition) - a mix of photo-oriented and alternate text layouts in Standard and "Storybook" styles.  The layouts are designed to maximize the visual impact of the kinetic illustrations while using negative space to keep the eye centered on content: swirling vines and a bold brush-stroke push across the page, embracing your content and photography with an eye-catching flair, while the Storybook masters take a more subdued approach, using restrained illustration as an accent to an expanded narrative-driven content model. Citation and Compare & Contrast masters offer compelling new ways to move your narrative beyond the bullet, while the accompanying chart fills - subtle textured paper for 2D charts and quick-rendering simple color fills for 3D - extend the hand-hewn metaphor without losing a professional flair that looks right at home on the finely textured paper backgrounds.

The Big Picture: Canto HD.

Canto HD, available exclusively in the Canto Pro Edition, expands the style into HD format with aspect-optimized 16:9 and 16:10 versions of the Canto design, so you can take advantage of the clean simplicity of a an iMac, a Mac-driven Cinema Display or HD Monitor, or a next-generation HD projection system as target presentation platforms without the "dead space" associated with running traditional 4:3 presentations on an HD display.  Whether attached to an HD display or projecting to an HD-equipped room, your presentation will take full advantage of every inch, custom-tailored to intelligently adapt the Canto aesthetic to the larger footprint of HD.

The Canto themes are Playback-Compatible with Keynote for iPad (1.x), so you can build your presentation using the Canto theme on your desktop or laptop for playback in Keynote for iPad with no updates or special workarounds required.  Keynote for iPad is a beautiful way to engage your audience in a tactile way, and the Canto style remains just as stunning at arm's length as it is projected on the big screen.

Supplemental Material

The Canto Supplemental Materials file includes the Canto color palettes, button objects for interactive presentations, as well as a multi-slide tutorial on integrating your own object Build-In and Build-Out settings into Kinetic slides so you can extend on the Canto Kinetic baseline in perfect harmony with the existing choreography. The Supplemental Materials are installed in your theme directory, ready to reference whenever you need to add a personal touch.
